BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--
State Street Corporation (NYSE: STT), the world's leading provider of
financial services to institutional investors, today announced that
IDG's Computerworld, has selected the company as one of the top Green-IT
Organizations for 2009. This honor is part of Computerworld's annual Top
Green-IT Organizations feature, published in the April 20 issue of
Computerworld and online at Computerworld.com.
For the second consecutive year, Computerworld set out to identify
organizations that are implementing smart, efficient strategies to
achieve "green IT." Organizations were invited to complete a
comprehensive questionnaire online in January and February. Ninety-four
organizations participated. To view the full survey, visit http://www.computerworld.com/html/research
and click on Top Green-IT Organizations.
"We are delighted to be recognized for State Street's approach to
managing environmental impact," said Madge Meyer, executive vice
president, Global Infrastructure Services at State Street. "IT
environmental practices have an immediate effect on energy optimization
and cost-effectiveness - as well as a long-term competitive advantage on
sustainability. Our program leverages creative ways to minimize the
environmental demand of technology. As a result, green thinking is
embedded in our culture, technology solutions and standard operating
procedures."
State Street's green IT initiatives include:
-- The "Zero Footprint Maximum Impact" strategy, which reduces the IT
infrastructure in local offices by relying on regional data centers and
technology to bring applications to users
-- Server Virtualization, which is the partitioning of a single server so
that it appears as multiple servers, has reduced State Street's CO2
emissions by more than 35.5 million pounds - the equivalent to planting
80,000 trees
-- Video and teleconferencing solutions to reduce travel and greenhouse gas
emissions
"Smart organizations know that there are energy and money savings beyond
data center walls, and even beyond the IT department. Green-IT efforts
are found up and down the supply chain, from the data center to the
desktop, from the mainframe to the end user," said Scot Finnie, editor
in chief, Computerworld. "The organizations recognized in our second
annual Top Green-IT issue have explored new ways to apply technology to
reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions in every part of their
operations."
