Company Also Named to Dow Jones Sustainability Index and Newsweek’s
Greenest US Companies List
BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--
State Street Corporation, one of the world’s leading providers of
financial services to institutional investors, today announced that for
the first time it has been commended by the Carbon Disclosure Project
(CDP), which represents 534 institutional investors with $64 trillion in
assets under management for its approach to climate change disclosure
and performance. Separately, State Street has been named to the Dow
Jones Sustainability World and North America Indexes (DJSI) for the
fifth consecutive year, and is ranked on Newsweek’s list of the
greenest US companies.
State Street’s Inclusion on the Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index
The Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index, a key component of CDP’s annual
S&P 500 Report, highlights the constituent companies within the S&P 500
Index which have displayed the most professional approach to corporate
governance with respect to climate change disclosure practices.
State Street received a high score indicating good internal data
management and understanding of climate change related issues affecting
the company.
The index, compiled by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) on behalf of CDP
provides an evaluation tool for institutional investors. In 2010, it
comprises 53 constituents of the S&P 500 Index based on analysis of the
responses to CDP’s 2010 questionnaire which focused on greenhouse gas
emissions, emissions reduction targets and risks and opportunities
associated with climate change.
The S&P 500 Report including names of companies featured in the Carbon
Disclosure Leadership Index can be found at www.cdproject.net.
State Street Named to Dow Jones Sustainability Index for Fifth
Consecutive Year
The Dow Jones Sustainability Index has been tracking the financial
performance of the leading sustainability-driven companies worldwide
since it was launched in 1999, providing asset managers with reliable,
objective benchmarks to manage sustainability portfolios. The DJSI
assesses companies annually based on their corporate economic,
environmental and social performance.
This year, State Street once again received high ratings for its risk
and crisis management practices, corporate governance and risk
management practices, and environmental and social reporting, among
other areas. State Street is also one of only three US-based financial
services firms to be listed on both the World and North American indices
in 2010.
State Street Listed on Newsweek’s List of the Greenest US
Companies
Newsweek released its second annual listing of the top 100 of
America’s 500 largest publicly-traded companies as measured by
environmental impact, strategy, policy, management, reputation and
overall performance. State Street was ranked 35th on the list.
The companies are ranked based on a number of criteria, including: each
company’s greenhouse gas emissions, toxic waste emissions and use of
other natural resources, as well as the company’s disclosure of those
impacts. Newsweek and its partners also assessed the company’s
management of environmental issues and policies, regulatory compliance
and policies concerning climate change. The rankings also factor in the
results of an exclusive reputational survey of CEOs, corporate social
responsibility officers, and “sector specialists.” State Street ranked
first in the financial services sector for green policies and
performance and second in the reputation survey.

list of the 500 greenest US companies is a testament to State Street’s
continued commitment to being a responsible corporation, even during the
most challenging of times for our industry. We are honored to be
recognized along with other national and global leaders in the areas of
sustainability and corporate citizenship.”
